This the Gordey Lake in the Village Lolonya. This is currently the source of water for the residents of Lolonya.
Most villages in Ghana are experiencing the same challenges.
We recently visited Lolonya and witnessed a day in the life of the children and their families and this is exactly what we experienced. Children as young as 7, walking miles and miles away, sometimes alone, to the Lake Gordey to fetch unsafe water. They do this up to five times in a day. This water is used for drinking, domestic and food production. It is a major contributor to diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, typhoid, hepatitis and polio.
Ghana has made significant progress in providing basic water services at the national level. However, only 36 percent of people use a safely managed water source, while only 18 percent have access to at least basic sanitation.
Maintenance and management of existing infrastructure also remains a challenge, as population growth and draining of wetlands combine to make water scarce, and rapid urbanization is further stressing access to safe drinking water and sanitation - Global Waters.
The Watch Foundation with your help and the help of expert Hydrogeologic Companies, will construct a mechanised borehole close to the Gordey Lake to extract constant and reliable safe water directly to Lolonya and surrounding villages.
The current cost for this project depending on the requirements of the location is between
GHC 12,000 (UK£1200) and GHC40,000 (UK£4000) based on the current rate of exchange September 2022
Due to the nature of the Lake Gordey and distance to the village, reverse osmosis will be needed to remove the salt content. Water tanks and pumps will be needed for storage. Water will then be delivered by water tankers to the communities when needed. The cost of the whole project will be approximately GHC40,000.
This project will be extended to other villages and towns in Ghana. Our next location is the village Larteh, in the Akwapem region of Ghana.
